  3. We encourage you to send in your registration card,
  4. not just for support and product updates, but also
  5. because we are constantly coming out with new, cutting
  6. edge titles on which we give our registered customers
  7. big discounts. We keep all of our customer names
  8. confidential and we never share our registered users
  9. list with anyone.

  11. To get optimal performance from your PC using this
  12. product read the following body of text.
  13.  
  14. We have provided you with two methods of viewing
  15. these images.
  16.  
  17. One method of looking at these files is with the
  18. Elite Viewer. If you are running Windows 3.1.x,
  19. then you will want to double-click on the appropriate
  20. Elite icon in the Digital Playground program group.
  21. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT, the
  22. Viewer will automatically run when you place the
  23. disc in your CD-ROM drive.
  24.  
  25. For those who might prefer an alternate viewing
  26. method, we have provided a popular shareware GIF
  27. viewer called 20/20, which can be found in the 2020
  28. directory of the CD-ROM.
  29.  
  30. To get optimal results from both of these programs,
  31. set your monitor to 640x480 at 256colors.
  32.  
  33. TIPS
  34. Be sure Windows is using a display driver that will
  35. provide 256 colors.  This product is not designed
  36. for 16-color displays (e.g., the standard Windows
  37. VGA driver).  If your monitor appears to be limited
  38. to 16 colors, run Windows Setup to install the
  39. display driver provided by your video card manufacturer
  40. that supports 256 colors. 
  41.  
  42. Operation will be a little faster, and better results
  43. are expected, if you use 640x480 resolution rather
  44. than anything higher.  If you operate this program
  45. in 1024x768 resolution, you may find that the "small
  46. fonts" driver works better than the "large fonts"
  47. driver (or, less frequently, vice versa, depending
  48. who wrote the drivers).
  49.  
  50. If you have problems reading any of your CD-ROMs
  51. check the CD-ROM for any scratches or finger prints.
  52. Use a soft cloth to wipe from the center to the edge.
  53. CD-ROMs are more vulnerable to damage than audio CDs,
  54. so always place them in the jewel box or CD caddies
  55. whenever possible.
  56.  
  57. Load time is improved by caching from the CD-ROM
  58. drive.  The DOS 6.2 version of Smart Drive includes
  59. a CD cache which works well.  To use it, start
  60. smartdrv.exe from your autoexec.bat and include
  61. the following line in your config.sys file:
  62.  
  63. device=c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /double_buffer
  64. Consult your DOS manual for more information.
  65.  
  66. This program uses a lot of Windows memory and
  67. resources.  As it is with almost any Windows
  68. application, not all of these are completely
  69. restorable to the system during and following
  70. execution.  Performance is best when this program
  71. is the first and only program running after starting
  72. Windows.
  73.  
  74. Color conflicts can be caused by your wallpaper.
  75. If the program loads up in the wrong colors, simply
  76. quit, set the wallpaper to [none] in Windows|
  77. Control-Panel|Desktop and run again.
  78.  
  79. HARDWARE NOTES
  80. ATI's "Crystal Fonts" mode is not supported.  Change
  81. the Video driver to a lower resolution.
  82.  
  83. If memory managers such as QEMM or 386 MAX are used
  84. and the program does not work, sometimes the creation
  85. of a system boot disk which loads only the necessary
  86. devices, all loaded low, will fix the problem.
  87.  
  88. Video Cards
  89.  
  90. The video program requires video software drivers
  91. and hardware that fully support Windows 3.1 or better
  92. standards.  The lists below show video systems that
  93. have been tested and found to be compatible with this
  94. program.  Installing the latest available video ROM
  95. and software is generally recommended.  Contact the
  96. video card manufacturer for information.

  183. Hardware Optimization:
  184.  
  185. Make sure your CD-ROM drive is configured properly.
  186. If your CD-ROM controller/host adapter is capable of
  187. DMA transfer, always use the DMA option. Sample
  188. "CONFIG.SYS" for Mitsumi CD-ROM drive:
  189.  
  190. device = mtmcde.sys /d:mscd001 /m:32 /i:10 /t:5

  192. Software configuration:
  193.  
  194. For optimal performance, use Microsoft CD-ROM driver
  195. 2.0 or higher. Edit your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file to
  196. allocate at least 30K drive buffer. Example:
  197.  
  198. MSCDEX /d:mscd001 /m:30
  199.  
  200. Make sure you are using the most recent versions of
  201. HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE,
  202. and SMARTDRV.EXE.  The copies that came with DOS 6.0
  203. are the most recent, and Windows 3.1 files are better
  204. than DOS 5.0 files.  Your config.sys should
  205. have something like the following:

  208. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
  209. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM NOEMS

  211. Your autoexec.bat should have something like:
